That a considerable fragment of the Fabulae of Hyginus—whoever Hyginus may have been and whenever he lived—exists in a Greek translation in the Hermeneumata Leidensia is well known to all students of his work. This essay summarizes recent advances made in the analysis of mosaic patches in chimaeric epithelia of the mouse. The conclusions drawn from the observed patterns are relevant to the behaviour of expanding cell populations during tissue growth and homeostasis. References are made to clonal analysis of Drosophila.

The aim of the present investigation was to describe and to classify significant ethical problems encountered by the members of the staff during the daily clinical work at a hospital medical department. A set of definitions was prepared for the purpose, including the definition of a 'significant ethical problem'. During a three month period 426 inpatients and 173 outpatients were admitted. Significant ethical problems were encountered during the management of 106 in-patients (25 per cent) and 9 out-patients (5 per cent). (...) No significant difference was found between the frequency of ethical problems in female and male patients, but a positive correlation was noted between the number of problems and the patients' age. The problem types were classified according to a problem list. The results of this investigation suggest that greater attention must be paid to discussions about ethical problems among doctors and other categories of health personnel and that, among others, medical students ought to be taught the analysis of ethical problems. Die Reaktionen auf dieses gestiegene und noch weiter steigende Interesse sind, soweit es die eigentlich sprachorientierten Disziplinen betrifft, unterschied lich: Die neueren Philologien haben immer dann, wenn sie in modernerer Ausrichtung betrieben und vertreten werden, die sprachlichen Gegebenheiten ihrer Objektbasis, also ihrer kulturrelevanten Texte, mitzuberücksichtigen versucht; die Sprachwissenschaft selbst hat im (...) Rahmen ihrer speziellen Ausprägung einer Allgemeinen Sprachwissenschaft ex officio mit der Sprache als solcher zu tun und z. B. in der Erforschung sprachlicher Universalien bestimmten universellen und generellen Zügen Rechnung getragen; die Philosophie schließlich hat nicht nur im Rahmen sprachphilosophischer Fragen über Sprache reflektiert, und innerhalb der Sprachphilosophie selbst hat sich die Erkenntnis durchzusetzen begonnen, daß eine Anerkennung und Berücksichtigung allgemein-lingu istischer Ergebnisse auch für philosophische Sprachreflexionen von Wert sein kann. Die vorliegende Arbeit gehört in diese letztgenannte Gruppe und verbindet philosophische Problem-mit linguistischer Sachkenntnis. Die Arbeit erhält damit einen besonderen Wert: Kann sie einerseits zu einer Modifi kation und Differenzierung philosophischer Problemstellungen anregen, so kann sie andrerseits zu einer Erweiterung des linguistischen Gesichtspunktspektrums beitragen. über die Konsequenzen philosophischerseits werden diejenigen urteilen, aus deren Be reich die Arbeit hervorgegangen und zu deren Anregung sie geschrieben ist, d. h. die Philosophen als Sachwalter spezifisch philosophischer Thematik. Wie wirklich ist die Wirklichkeit? Können wir einen sicheren erkennenden Zugang zu”der Wirklichkeit“gewinnen? Und wie ist die Wahrheit bzw. die Objektivität dieses Zugangs zu bewerten? Welche Rolle spielt die Sprache beim Umgang mit”der Wirklichkeit“? Dominiert im Erkenntnisprozess das Subjekt oder das Objekt? Ja, gibt es überhaupt etwas”da draußen“, oder ist alles nur unsere Konstruktion? In immer neuen Beschreibungsanläufen wird in diesem Buch versucht, plausible Zusammenhänge zwischen Themen aus dem weiten Umkreis der Wirklichkeitsdebatten herzustellen. Es geht, wie H. Putnam u.a. zu (...) sagen pflegen, um descriptions and redescriptions - und dafür soll eine epistemologisch entspanntere Argumentationsweise entworfen werden. Der Zweck der einleitenden Kapitel 1-11 besteht darin, interessante Ansatzpunkte, Startideen, Argumente und Varietäten unterschied-licher Beschreibungen zu den jeweilige Themen vorzustellen. Durch die Auswahl der vorgestellten Argumentationen soll die Tendenz der eigenen Problembehandlung im zweiten Teil sozusagen vorlaufend markiert werden, ohne dass damit Identitäten in der Theoriebildung behauptet werden. Wohl aber soll damit auf die Anschlussfähigkeit von Argumentationen in verschiedenen theoretischen Kontexten verwiesen werden. Der zweite Teil bietet eine strikt Prozess-orien-tierte Beschreibung von Themen aus dem Umkreis der Wirklichkeitsdebatte, die Anspruch auf sinnvolle Vorläufigkeit erhebt und sich bemüht, hartnäckige philosophische Probleme aufzulösen. - Damit ist auch eine Abkehr vom”klassischen“Konstruktivismus markiert. I argue that in a classical universe, all the events that ever happen are encoded in each of the universe's parts. This conflicts with a statement which is widely believed to lie at the basis of relativity theory: that the events in a space-time region R determine only the events in R's domain of dependence but not those in other space-time regions. I show how, from this understanding, a new prediction method (which I call the &unknown;Smoothness Method&unknown;) can be obtained (...) which allows us to predict future events on the basis of local observational data. Like traditional prediction methods, this method makes use of so-called &unknown;ceteris paribus clauses&unknown;, i.e. assumptions about the unobserved parts of the universe. However, these assumptions are used in a way which enables us to predict the behaviour of open systems with arbitrary accuracy, regardless of the influence of their environment--which has not been achieved by traditional methods. In a sequel to this paper (Schmidt, 1998), I will prove the Uniqueness and Predictability Theorems on which the Smoothness Method is based, and comment in more detail on its mathematical properties. Theorien der "Anerkennung" zeichnen sich durch eine außergewöhnliche Leistungsstärke aus. In den letzten Jahren haben sie die Forschung auf den Gebieten der Moralphilosophie, der Politischen Philosophie und der Sozialphilosophie, aber auch auf denen der Psychologie und der Sozialwissenschaften sowohl thematisch als auch methodisch sehr stark bereichert. Schmidt’s timely article offers a fresh look at radical constructivism with an emphasis on contextually and culturally located action as an expression of knowing. Perhaps it remains cautious in making connections with neighbouring philosophical approaches. Two areas that are largely unmentioned are the issue of viability and the conceptual analysis, which remained largely on the (...) sidelines in von Glasersfeld’s later work. (shrink)

The present volume contains the lectures and papers given at the 1994 international conference on hermeneutics in Halle (Germany). The conference aimed at a state of the art in the light of recent developments in science and humanities. The place in which the conference was held is renowned for its centuries-old tradition in hermeneutics and among the lectures there are indeed some devoted to this history. For the most part, however, the papers concentrate on present-day problems in fields as different (...) as comparative literature, religious studies, bible exegesis, esthetics, social sciences, intercultural dialogue. The theme of the conference, "strangeness and familiarity", reflects the tension in which any interpretation process is situated and that any theory of interpretation has to account for. Faces are complex stimuli that can be described via intuitive facial features like the eyes, nose, and mouth, “configural” features like the distances between facial landmarks, and features that correspond to computations performed in the early visual system (e.g. oriented edges). With regard to this latter category of descriptors, adult face recognition relies disproportionately on information in specific spatial frequency and orientation bands: Many recognition tasks are performed more accurately when adults have access to mid-range spatial frequencies (8-16 cycles/face) and (...) horizontal orientations (Dakin & Watt, 2009). In the current study, we examined how this information bias develops in middle childhood. We recruited children between the ages of 5-10 years old to participate in a simple categorization task that required them to label images according to whether they depicted a face or a house. Critically, children were presented with face and house images comprised either of primarily horizontal orientation energy, primarily vertical orientation energy, or both horizontal and vertical orientation energy. We predicted that any bias favoring horizontal information over vertical should be more evident in faces than in houses, and also that older children would be more likely to show such a bias than younger children. We designed our categorization task to be sufficiently easy that children would perform at near-ceiling accuracy levels, but with variation in response times that would reflect how they rely on different orientations as a function of age and object category. We found that horizontal bias for face detection (but not house detection) correlated significantly with age, suggesting an emergent category-specific bias for horizontal orientation energy that develops during middle childhood. These results thus suggest that the tuning of high-level recognition to specific low-level visual features takes take place over several years of visual development. (shrink)
